Biography
Since Rebecca Rütten started her own business as a freelance photographer in 2013, she has well-traveled all around: she met US veterans in Vietnam, hedonists on an island in Central America, trained young talents in Uganda and lived for a few weeks on a ship of the sea rescue organisation “Sea Watch”. In 2021, she worked as a digital creator on the Instagram project “Ich bin Sophie Scholl”, a co-production of SWR and Bayerischer Rundfunk. Rütten’s perhaps best-known project, however, is “Contemporary Pieces”. In it, she recreated Renaissance paintings with fast food.
But it is not only Rütten’s free works that are characterised by the fact that she combines the documentary with elements from art. In her commercial works, too, she makes free use of different visual languages and narrative structures. Aesthetics alone are not enough for her.
In recent years, Rütten has realised projects for Spotify, Warsteiner, Yamaha, and the production companies UFA Fiction, Fischerappelt and TLGG, among others. She also photographs for publications such as VICE magazine and Der Spiegel. Rütten has also been working as a videographer since 2017. Among other things, she filmed the aftermovies for well-known festivals such as Melt, Splash, Lollapalooza and XJazz.
Rütten was born in Cologne in 1991 and grew up in Hamburg. She studied visual communication in Hamburg and film, photography and design in California. She has been doing a Master’s in Dortmund since 2021. If Rütten isnt travelling, she lives mainly in Berlin.
